The Symptoms and Repairs
Bad Graphics Card or GPU – This is a common issue in today’s high powered graphics oriented laptops. The symptoms usually involve some of the following.
1. Computer turns on (lights and fans power up) but the screen remains black and no hard disk activity.
EXAMPLE:
2. Computer turns on but the image has cross hatched lines or the image eventually starts to fade to white until it’s gone.
EXAMPLE:

3. Computer will turn on for a short while and rapidly turn off.
Why do these things happen? Well the reason the graphics card goes out is usually related to heat. The card gets too hot and begins to separate from the board and causes the computer computer to malfunction.
EXAMPLE:

What can we do to fix it? Well there are a few options. Sometimes we repair the card by re-flowing or re-melting the solder back to the board and re-engineering the cooling. However the most recommended method is to replace the motherboard or logic board. I know this sounds expensive but we do it for relatively cheap.
EXAMPLE REFLOW:

Bad Motherboard – Motherboards are the base to any computer. They communicate with all the devices. Motherboards fail for various reasons. Usually its a power amplifier, graphics card, north or south bridge failure and sometimes it’s from trauma. Sometimes the board can be repaired but often it’s best to replace the board.
EXAMPLE MOTHERBOARD:

Bad CPU (Central Processing Unit) – This is not terribly common but on several occassions it has been repaired by carefully diagnosing the issue and testing with a known good processor. The symptoms of a bad CPU are often the computer is unable to boot but turns on. Another good indicator is the computer turns on and reboots just after the bios loading screen.
